Roger Haug, who made an indelible impact on the lives of many at the University of Mary both on the court and in the classroom, was head women’s basketball coach of the Marauders 2000 national championship squad and long-time mathematics instructor.
Haug came to the University of Mary in 1987 after a very successful coaching career at St. Mary’s Central High School in Bismarck, ND, as an associate head football coach and a mathematics instructor. The native of Dickinson, ND, spent 12 years with the Marauders football program, initially as a defensive coordinator and then offensive coordinator before coaching the defensive line coach under Tom Shea and current Marauders Athletic Director Dale Lennon.
In 1988 Haug joined the University of Mary men’s basketball team as associate head coach and top assistant to the legendary Al Bortke.
Haug took ownership of the women’s basketball program in 1990 and immediately led the Marauders to a subdistrict title. The Marauders soon became a dominant force, claiming their first North Dakota College Athletic Conference title in 1994 and a NAIA national tournament appearance. It was the first of seven NDCAC and Dakota Athletic Conference crowns and six trips to the NAIA national tournament for Haug and the Marauders.
The pinnacle of Haug’s coaching career was reached in 2000 when he directed the Marauders to the NAIA national championship, the University of Mary’s lone team title in any sport. Retiring from college coaching after making the NAIA quarterfinals in 2003, Haug finished with an amazing record of 233-119 in 13 seasons and continued to coach high school sports until his passing.
When health issues forced Haug to leave collegiate coaching, he continued to teach mathematics at the University of Mary until 2015 and was honored with the distinction of Professor Emeritus. In 1989 and 1996 he received the Outstanding Faculty Award and was honored with the Regent’s Award for teaching faculty in 1999. He maintained the Marauders women’s basketball scorebook for several years and was honored by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as a Noel Olson award winner, among numerous other awards. Haug also continued to teach and coach at St. Mary’s Central High School.
Inducted into the Marauders Hall of Fame in 1999, Haug and his wife Sue have four children: Michael, Craig, Pat and Michele.
