The first University of Mary wrestler to win a national championship and a two-time All-American, Monte Trusty played a major role in the Marauders wrestling program becoming a force on the national level.
A two-time North Dakota state high school champion at Bismarck Century High School, Trusty attended Northeastern Oklahoma his freshman season before transferring to the University of Mary in the fall of 1991 to wrestle for his father, Milo, who was named to the Marauders Hall of Fame in 2002.
In his first season, Trusty dominated the mat for UMary, placing third at the NAIA national championships in the 134 pound weight class. It was just the second time in program history a UMary wrestler had placed nationally. Year two was even more impressive. Despite moving up a weight class to 142, Trusty rolled over the competition to become the first Marauders national champion in any sport, winning the championship match 8-4 and finishing a perfect 32-0 against NAIA competition. Additionally he helped UMary place 4th in the team standings, the first time UMary posted a Top 10 finish. Over the course of two seasons, Trusty accumulated an incredible record of 74-3-1. Injury forced him to miss the 1993 season before earning a letter in his final season at NCAA Division I Oregon State University.
The son of Milo and Vicki Trusty, Monte is a 1995 graduate of the University of Mary with a degree in Physical Education. The Windsor, CO, resident is the head wrestling coach at Windsor (CO) High School and the general manager of Spa Palace Inc. The father to Christopher, Gage and Jake, Monte is married to fellow UMary graduate Michell (Ross).
