A record-setting national champion and a five-time All-American, Kristen (Schwehr) Herman proved to be one of the best women’s track & field athletes in University of Mary history. A team leader, Herman was part of seven conference championship teams.

A local high school standout at Bismarck Century High School, Herman came into her own as a sophomore during the 2002-03 season, earning All-American honors after placing fifth at both the NAIA indoor and outdoor national championships. She reached the pinnacle of college success the following season, capturing the NAIA indoor pole vault national championship in 2004 while setting the national meet record. Herman would add another All-American honor at the NAIA outdoor championships in the spring while sweeping the Dakota Athletic Conference indoor and outdoor titles. As a senior and team captain in 2005, she again swept the DAC-10 indoor and outdoor pole vault titles and won her fifth All-American citation at the NAIA outdoor championships.

In addition to her five All-American honors, Herman captured four DAC-10 championships and was a member of seven DAC-10 conference championship teams.

The daughter of Chuck and Margo Schwehr, Kristen graduated magna cum laude from the University of Mary in 2005 with degrees in early childhood and elementary education. She has also added a master’s degree from St. Catherine’s University. A second grade teacher for Bismarck Public Schools, Kristen and her husband Kyle are the parents of Kira and Kamden.
