Transferring to the University of Mary in the fall of 1979, Kay began to share her success with the Lady Marauders. Women’s basketball began at the University in 1973, but had yet to tally a winning season. Under the leadership of Kay Berg, their luck began to change. During the next two years, the Lady Marauders accumulated 30 victories. The 1979-80 team won the North Dakota State Association of Collegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Championship. The Lady Marauders defeated highly favored Jamestown College in the championship round. The team advanced to the AIAW Regionals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, earning the highest finish at that time by any Lady Marauder basketball team.

Ranked fifth on the All-Time Scoring Leaders List, Kay scored 906 points in her two years at the University. She is also ranked 11th on the All-Time Assist Leaders list with 144 assists in two seasons. Following graduation, Kay assumed a teaching position at Bowdon High School in Bowdon, ND, where she also served as the girls head basketball coach. Currently, Kay is teaching and coaching at Christ the King Elementary and Junior High School in Mandan.
