Jessica Zundel
Outstanding Athlete
Women’s Basketball 2001–2005

Jessica Zundel hails from Jud, ND, and attended Gackle-Streeter High School, where she gained region-wide recognition for her athletic abilities. Seeing those abilities in action at numerous University of Mary basketball camps, then-Coach Roger Haug put great energy into getting this outstanding student-athlete to sign a letter of intent with the Marauders, and his efforts were well worth it.

In 2003, her sophomore year at the University of Mary, Jessica helped lead her team into the NAIA National Tournament, where they advanced to the final Elite Eight, losing to the highly ranked Concordia, NE, by one point. As a junior, playing under a new head coach, Fred Fridley, Jessica helped take the team to the NAIA Final Four, finishing with a still unmatched 32-win and only 3 -loss season. Jessica and her 2003-2004 teammates set seven offensive school records and were named the NDAPSSA Female College Team of the Year for North Dakota. They also played in three NAIA National Tournaments.

The DAC-10 Freshman of the Year and an All-Conference performer her sophomore, junior and senior years, Jessica’s many accomplishments also include being the all-time scoring leader of the Marauders women’s team, with a total of 1,824 points; all-time season leader with 419 rebounds in 2003-2004; third all-time leader in assists, and second all-time leader in rebounding. She was named NAIA All-American First Team twice, in 2003-2004 as a junior, and in 2004-2005 in her final season of eligibility. She was also the NDAPSSA Female Athlete of the Year and the Bismarck Tribune Sportswomen of the Year in 2005.

Setting an example for all with her strong work ethic, academic achievements, and servant-leadership, she has had a positive influence on her teammates and earned the respect of fans on the local, conference, regional, and national scene.

Jessica was awarded her B.S. in nursing in 2005. She resides in Bismarck and is employed at St. Alexius Medical Center. She is the daughter of Neil and Marion Zundel of Jud.
