Jason Salz began his U-Mary athletic career playing football, redshirting in 1992, his freshman year, he played Marauders football the next four years. But it was on the baseball diamond that Jason came into his own. When U-Mary fielded its first baseball team in 1996, playing in the ND College Athletic Conference, Jason immediately emerged as an outstanding player under Coach Bill Sharp. Then under Coach Steve LeGrand, Jason’s pitching, hitting, and leadership skills helped the Marauders become conference co-champions and earn them a spot in the NAIA Great Plains Regional Tournament. Jason’s honors include having been team captain; an NDCAC All Conference Player (1996 & 1997); NDCAC 1997 Player of the Year; a member of The Great Plains All Region Team (1997); and Marauders Most Valuable Player (1996 &1997). He holds the U-Mary record as the pitcher giving up the fewest hits per 7-inning game and the pitcher giving up the fewest walks — only 10 in two years of play. A graduate of St. Mary’s Central H.S., Jason earned a Bachelor of Science in 1997 and a Master of Education in 2007 and served overseas in the 1st. Ranger Battalion of the U.S. Army. He now teaches and coaches in Mandan, ND. The son of Rick and Bernie Salz of Bismarck, he is the first baseball player to enter the Hall of Fame.
