An extremely talented and successful runner for the Lady Marauder track and field teams, Gerene (Sayler) Mattern came to the University of Mary in 1991 after graduating from St. Mary’s Central High School in Bismarck, ND.

In 1994, Gerene led the Lady Marauders to a first place finish at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets. In doing this, the Lady Marauders upset Jamestown College, the dominant track and field school in the conference, and established themselves as the current leaders in the former NDCAC and the new DAC-10. Since 1994, the Lady Marauders have not experienced defeat at a conference championship.

Gerene also led the women in establishing the national standards in both the indoor and outdoor track and field programs. In 1995 she led the Lady Marauders to a ninth place finish at the NAIA Indoor National Meet. Since then, the Lady Marauders have remained in the top 10. Gerene also set records as a sprinter that have yet to be broken. She holds the 400M record (56.10s) and the 300M record (41.94s).

Gerene earned many awards for her accomplishments on the track including 15 All-Conference honors and three NAIA All-American Honors.

Gerene is currently living in Bismarck with her husband, Darren.
