As a standout track athlete from White Shield High School, Bruce Hall led his two-mile relay team to a state record and a school record that has never been broken. Upon graduation from high school, Bruce enrolled at Haskell Junior College in Kansas, where he continued a very successful track career. While at Haskell he earned All-American honors when his team placed third in the distance medley relay. He also placed sixth in the All-Indian National Cross Country Meet, where Billy Mills, the 1964 10,000-Meter Olympic Champion, presented him with his medal. After graduating from Haskell, Bruce joined the United States Marine Corps, where he continued his passion for running. While stationed in Hawaii, Bruce won the Navy Relief 10,000-Meter Championship. He also ran in the Pepsi 10,000-Meter Championship and qualified for nationals, where he ran against greats like Rod Dixon. In 1981, Bruce set a record in the 26.2-Mile Windward Marathon. He returned in ’82 and broke his own record by seven minutes. In his final Hawaiian race, he captured the Road Runners of America 15,000-Meter State Championship. With an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 1984, he returned to North Dakota to work for the gasification plant in Beulah. In the fall of 1985, Bruce enrolled at the University of Mary. By 1986, he had set records in the steeple-chase and at distances of 1,500, 5,000, and 10,000 meters. He was also the first U-Mary athlete to compete in the NAIA National Cross Country Meet.
