The first University of Mary scholar-athlete to ever be selected in a major professional draft in any sport, Andy Leer parlayed an impressive career on the diamond for the University of Mary baseball team into a professional baseball opportunity after he was selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the Minnesota Twins.

Leer arrived on campus in the fall of 2006 from Williston, ND, and immediately became the starting shortstop at the University of Mary, a position he would hold down all four seasons with the Marauders. As a freshman in 2007, the Marauders first season competing in NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun, Leer led the team in batting (.321) and runs scored. The Marauders leadoff hitter his first three years, he again paced the team in runs scored and was a perfect 18-for-18 in steals as a junior in 2009. Leer posted his best offensive numbers as a senior in 2010, leading the Marauders in batting average (.353), on base percentage (.416) and slugging percentage (.687) – all career highs – plus runs scored, triples and home runs on his way to earning All-Northern Sun second team honors. A 3-time Northern Sun All-Academic Team selection and UMary’s first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, Leer finished his career as the Marauders all-time leader in hits, runs scored and triples and was second in steals. He never missed a game in four seasons with the Marauders, starting 171 straight games at shortstop. Leer was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 25th round of the 2010 draft and played four seasons of minor league baseball.

Andy joins his sister, Sarah Leer Power, in the Marauders Hall of Fame. The children of Wade and Belva Leer are the first brother-sister combination to both earn Hall of Fame honors. Additionally their brother Matt also played baseball at UMary. A 2010 graduate of the University of Mary with a degree in Business Administration, Andy works for Leer Resources in Bismarck, ND. Andy and his wife, Kayla, are the parents of Avery.
