Combining an impenetrable defense with a formidable attack, the 2007 University of Mary women’s soccer team permanently etched their name in the school’s history book as the first Marauders team to qualify for an NCAA tournament.
In the second year competing in NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun, the NCAA granted UMary active membership two years earlier than scheduled and the Marauders took full advantage of the opportunity. After winning the 2006 NSIC tournament in the Marauders inaugural season in the league, UMary repeated the feat in 2007, winning three straight tournament games by 1-0 scores. Jessica Janusz scored on a penalty kick in a 1-0 win over Bemidji State in game one and Megan Wilson scored the lone goal in each of the next two games as UMary defeated Southwest Minnesota State in the semifinals and MSU Moorhead for the title. An All-American as a freshman, Wilson was named the NSIC tournament MVP.
The 4th seed at the NCAA Central Regional in Mankato, MN, the Marauders faced #5 Central Missouri to open tournament play. Wilson provided UMary a 1-0 lead at intermission but the Jennies struck twice for goals in the second half – including the game-winner in the 89th minute – to end the Marauders memorable season.
UMary finished 2007 with a record of 16-7-0 overall and 6-3-0 in league play. The Marauders outscored the opposition 39-17 and posted 14 clean sheets on the season. Seven times the Marauders claimed 1-0 wins, including their last five wins of the year. The 16 victories equals the program single-season high.
