Featuring dominant pitching, a deep lineup with a powerful attack and a surehanded defense, the 2003 University of Mary softball team made the program’s deepest run towards a national title with a 4th place finish at the NAIA World Series.
Under the direction of Marauders Hall of Fame head coach Brad Walsh, the Marauders rampaged through Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC-10) to win the league title with a record of 19-3. Earning the right to host the Region III tournament, the Marauders used their home field advantage to earn a regional crown and earn a berth to the NAIA Word Series in Decatur, AL.
Making their 5th straight World Series appearance, the Marauders split their first two games before running off four straight wins – 3-2 vs. Union, 3-1 vs. Columbia, 6-1 vs. Oklahoma City and 16-6 vs. Oklahoma Christian to move into the semifinals. The Marauders title hopes ended in a 5-2 loss to Mobile and finished the season 38-16.
Danelle Murphy was named the NAIA Region III Pitcher of the Year and Nicole Seaver claimed regional player of the year honors. Murphy was also the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) 10 Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-Conference team by Seaver, Amanda Hinton, Miranda Kephart, and Cassie Smith. Walsh earned DAC10 Coach of the Year. Murphy, Seaver, and Smith were all named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team. Murphy and Seaver have joined Walsh in the Marauders Hall of Fame.
